Free Stuff for Kids - at your Library!

I am a huge fan of the library systems in the KC area.  There's always a fun program, reading incentive, or something else going on - no matter where in the KC Metro you might live!  Here are a few of my current favorite library happenings:

Mid-Continent Public Library (serves Jackson, Clay, & Platte Counties in MO)
RAFT: Reading Aloud Family Time, January 18 - March 31, 2011

How would you like to earn a FREE copy of the classic The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, just for reading 3 chapter books aloud with your family?  This program is going on right now and it's an awesome way to get kids excited about reading!  Participating families who read 3 multi-chapter books together earn a free hardback version of The Jungle Book, an award certificate, and a chance to win a DVD copy of Disney’s film version of The Jungle BookClick here to see the program guidelines or to sign up!

Kansas City Public Library (serves greater KC area)
Johnson County Library (serves Johnson County, KS)
18th Annual Young Writer's Contest - presented by Reading Reptile

These two library systems are sponsoring a young writer's event from Reading Reptile, a fun bookstore located in Brookside.  Writers must be between ages 5-12 and should submit a story that is 500 words or less.  6 (or more) stories will be chosen as winners and read aloud at a special reception for all contestants on Friday, February 18th, 2010, at 7pm, at the Plaza Library.  All contestants will receive a certificate of recognition!  Entries must be turned in by January 28 - that's less than a week away, so start writing!  Click here for more info, rules, and entry form!

All right, young readers and writers of Kansas City - there are many adventures ahead of you!  Better get started today!  :)
