Across the Wide River, written by Stephanie Reed, is based on the real life story of Adam Lowry Rankin, who as a child lived in the slave state of Kentucky until his family moved across the Ohio River to the free state of Ohio. Lowry sees first-hand the ugly truth of slavery and helps his family operate the first stop of the Underground Railroad in Ohio. As he grows into a youth, Lowry is torn between his duty to help others and his desire to make his own destiny.
What I found most fascinating about Across the Wide River, is that the story is based on true historical events. Using Ancestry.com, I did a little looking to see if I could find any record of these characters. In the 1850 US Federal Census, I found Adam L. Rankin, who is listed as a preacher, married to Amanda (referred to as Mandy during much of the book). They had one daughter. In the 1860 Census, Adam was living in Illinois as a missionary. This book is targeted toward older children and teens, but I think its a fantastic read for adults too. Being able to trace the stories of these real people really helps to bring a whole new perspective to the story.
