Over the last 14 months, I am pretty sure I have uncovered every possible muscle ache in my body. Pregnancy, birth, and then just being a mommy really take their toll! At least, that's the case for me. This is why I was so excited to have the opportunity to check out Massage Envy here in Kansas City. Massage Envy has locations all over the country (900 locations in 43 states) - and each one is open seven days a week!
I had never had a massage before my visit to Massage Envy (keep reading to hear about my experience), but the benefits of massage therapy are many! Regular massage therapy is reported to relieve stress, encourage relaxation, improve posture, lower blood pressure, improve circulation, manage pain, and much more.
I was personally looking to just have the chance to relax a little. Between blogging, working part-time, teaching children's drama, and taking care of L full-time, I get very little sleep. And a lot of times when I do sleep, it is in my rocking chair with the baby in my arms! While I am not complaining at all - I admit that all of this leaves me feeling exhausted and achy, a lot of the time.
If you've never visited Massage Envy, you probably wonder about the pricing. An introductory one-hour massage session costs $49. Memberships are available for $59 per month and include a one-hour massage session - plus members can enjoy unlimited additional one-hour massage sessions at the $39 member rate. If, like me, you don't have much experience having massage therapy, you may want to note that tips are also encouraged and Massage Envy's suggested rate begins at $12 for a one-hour session.
Now, a little bit about my massage experience!
As I mentioned, I had never previously had a massage, so I had no idea what to expect! Thankfully, Massage Envy has a fantastic page (on their website) that explains everything a newbie needs to know.
I arrived at the Massage Envy clinic (Leawood location) a few minutes before my scheduled appointment. I felt welcomed by the friendly staff members right away! I was given a clipboard with some short forms to fill out - regarding medical history and what I was looking for in my massage. Once I had completed my form, a smling staff member gave me a tour of the location and showed me a treatment room so that I would know what to expect. I was then led to the "Tranquility Room" and given a cup of water to sip while I waited for my appointment to begin.
My therapist arrived in the Tranquility Room shortly after that. She introduced herself with a smile, then led me back to a treatment room. After discussing my expectations for my session, she told me that I could disrobe to my comfort level, and to wait under the crisp sheets on the massage table. She returned shortly to begin my massage session.
The whole experience was very relaxing. The lights were dimmed and soft, tranquil music was playing. The massage session was fifty minutes long but honestly it seemed like just a few minutes to me! My therapist was obviously very well trained and after she had massaged my face, arms, hands, arms, feet, and back - I felt so relaxed that I think I could have fallen asleep on the massage table and slept away the rest of the day! The massage table was super comfortable - with a warming blanket that was adjusted just perfectly. The room itself was a little chilly, which made the warmth of the table so inviting!
It was somewhat difficult to leave the calm massage room and head out into the bright and sunny lobby. My relaxed mood carried over to the rest of the day, which was great since I had several other things on my to-do list that evening!
The only negative thing I would say about my entire visit is that I wasn't a big fan of how the leftover massage oil felt on my skin after I left. I am weird about my skin sometimes though (I don't like certain lotions/scents/etc), so this may have been just me!
Overall, I was definitely pleased by the Massage Envy experience. You may ask - would I go back? At $49 a visit (plus tip), I can't say that I will be able to make appointments for myself frequently, but if money were no object, absolutely I would be back all the time! You can bet I will be reminding the hubby that a massage might be a great gift idea (and my birthday is coming up)!
