{Children's Book Review} The Three Trees: A Traditional Folktale by Elena Pasquali
"Long ago on a hillside, stood three trees" begins a sweet story entitled The Three Trees, written by Elena Pasquali. Each of the trees has dreams of what it wants to become someday. The first imagines itself as a fine treasure chest, holding the world's richest valuables. The second tree wishes to one day become part of a mighty ship that will carry powerful kings. Unlike the first two, the final tree hopes to remain just as it is, planted on the top of the hill pointing toward heaven. All three trees are felled and their journeys take them where they never dreamed, fulfilling their dreams in a fashion they couldn't imagine through the life of Jesus. This traditional folktale is great for Christmastime, Easter or anytime.
I was first struck by the cover of this tome. The artwork (by Sophie Windham) is simply beautiful. Honestly, I could just stare at the cover all day. Having never read this story before, I did not realize that it was a "Christian" tale. I felt terrible for the trees as they each seemingly ended up in less than satisfactory settings. But as each tree's ultimate purpose is revealed, you can see that the story is really about how life may not go as you planned, but you still have an ultimate purpose. I highly recommend reading the book.
