Review: Doppleganger Chronicles 3: The Great Mogul Diamond

It seems to me that British children have a tendency to always get themselves into mysterious trouble. First the Pevensie children battled the White Witch in Narnia, then young Mr. Potter and friends faced off with You-Know-Who, and now we have the adventursome kids in The Doppleganger Chronicles, written by G.P. Taylor. This series is geared toward kids ages 8-12, particularly reluctant readers. The books beautifully weave traditional text with art, making the series a hybrid book and graphic novel.

The Doppleganger Chronicles follow three orphaned children: Erik Morrissey Ganger and twins Sadie and Saskia Dopple. By the third book in the series, the Dopple twins have been adopted by wealthy writer and recluse, Muzz Elliott. All is well until a mysterious note appears and Muzz Elliott takes the girls on a trip to France. Erik teams up with adventurer Dorcas Potts to help them. The girls realize that something is amiss when they overhear a hushed phone conversation Muzz Elliott is having, then the plots of her murder mystery books begin happening for real! Meanwhile, Erik and Dorcas have to race through the Alps to get to them in time, also while having to aviod being killed by the French Mafia. It all comes together in Cannes when the one of the good guys gets kidnapped, and our heroes are forced to try to steal the Great Mogul Diamond.

My Take:
Even as an adult, I found this book very entertaining. The combination of traditional text and graphic art makes for an excellent read. I would say about a quarter of the book is graphic art. Yet on many of the traditional text pages, there are illustrations or photos that just pull you even further into the story. I can see why kids (and adults) love this series, even relucant readers. Move over Lewis and Rowling, there's a new guy in town.

You can find this book (along with the first two titles in the series) at Amazon!
