Review: Money Secrets of the Amish

Money Secrets of the Amish: Finding True Abundance in Simplicity, Sharing, and Saving, written by Lorilee Craker, was a wonderful read. While I strive to live a frugal life, I usually hate books on financial advice as a lot of the suggestions for change are just not practical for my family. When I received this book, I feared it would be the same. I was so happily surprised. In fact, I have been so excited by the things I have read that I have talked my hubby’s ear off whenever we’re on the road somewhere and I’ve just finished a chapter.

The author, Lorilee Craker, was inspired to write this book when she realized that her family was strapped from slowing work opportunities and constant financial needs. She heard a story on NPR about how the Amish were thriving despite the downturn in the economy and wanted
to know just how they did this. Some of the ideas seem so basic that I thought, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Several of the proposals include “UWMW: Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make Do, or Do Without” and “Rethinking Gifts.” The UWMW principle comes from the fact that the Amish are experts at making things last and repurposing items rather than trashing them. And the rethinking gifts chapter made me rethink my natural tendencies on gift-giving. Overall, I felt extremely happy and ready to makes changes, both big and small, to start living a bit simpler and saving big.

  1. I’ve enjoyed all of Lorilee’s books, but I especially loved this one. The author wraps some great nuggets of wisdom in a fun-to-read book. I think it’s got some common sense tips, in a format that’s accessible to someone who wouldn’t typically pick up a book on finances. The author’s own “money makeover,” documented with humor, made me believe I could take the same simple steps to save money and live better.
