My Best Friend, Abe Lincoln, written by Robert L. Bloch, is a clever little story based on Abe Lincoln’s childhood in Indiana. The story is written from the perspective of Abe’s best friend, Sam Harding. Sam is a fictional character, but there is no added content to distract from the historical facts about Abraham Lincoln’s life. There may easily have been a “Sam” and I enjoy thinking that there was! The delightful tale begins when the Lincoln family moves to the town of Little Pigeon Creek, Indiana, where Sam and Abe attend school together. And even though Sam is a fictional character, a lof of the events that take place in the story are based on true events in Abraham Lincoln’s life.
This charming piece of historical fiction is blended with beautiful illustrations by John W. Ewing - who actually worked as a Disney animation artist from 1956-1967! I am sometimes picky about children's book illustrations - and these are gorgeous!
The story is well written and easy for children to understand. I think this is a great resource for young readers to learn about important events - and a great man - in our nation's history! I am so glad to have found this book. You can be sure that we will be reading it to our little L many times over - until he is old enough to read it for himself.
