Quidam
It’s difficult to explain Cirque du Soleil to someone who has never experienced it. Cirque du Soleil is part Circus part Performance Arts, part Fantasy. Instead, I will tell you a little about Cirque du Soleil the History. Quidam the Story. Then a little about the Kansas City Performance at the Sprint Center. My husband and I had the extreme pleasure of attending the Opening Night Performance.Cirque du Soleil
In 1984 73 people worked for Cirque du Soleil and today the business has 5,000 employees worldwide including more than 1,300 artists. More than 10 types of occupations can be found at Cirque du Soleil. The average age of employees is 37. The company’s employees and artist represent close to 50 nationalities and speak 25 different languages. More than 100 million people have seen a Cirque du Soleil show since 1984.
Quidam Overview
A bored young girl named ZoĆ© whose parents basically ignore her is Quidam’s entire story. Her life has lost all meaning. Seeking to fill the void she slides into an imaginary world – the world of Quidam – where she meets characters who encourage her to free her soul. Unlike other Cirque du Soleil shows, Quidam does not take spectators to an imaginary realm of fanciful, larger than life characters. Instead it is an look in our own world, inhabited by real people and real life concerns. For those curious about what Quidam means: quite simply it is a member of the crowd, a faceless person rushing by, anonymous society, one of the silent majority.
Quidam at the Sprint Center
Two words for this show – Amazing and Unpredictable. The audience mesmerized by feats of aerial acrobatics on ropes, flying hoops and trapeze swings. The music was hypnotizing. The costumes amazing and unlike any I have seen before in a Cirque du Soleil show. Costumes were loosely based on everyday clothing with a gloomy touch only Cirque du Soleil could pull off successfully.
Cyr Wheel – this artist became a human spoke as he spun inside this oversized wheel. He created an amazing show with twists and turns in rapid succession. We held our breath as performers wrapped in silk high above unwound toward the ground stopping suddenly, mere feet above the floor (there is no net), followed by audible gasps. The clown was truly hilarious; his antics in both scenes were delivered perfectly. He was truly amazing at engaging the audience and eliciting enjoyment and laughter. One of our favorites, the Statue – two artists, performers, acrobats (I truly have no words to describe these individuals) they move with almost painfully slow precision, and deliver a performance that shows the beauty and strength of the human body. The intensity, strength, flexibility and beauty of these two artists is beyond mind blowing. The Banquine – acrobats beyond the normal term acrobat, performed staggering feats creating pyramids and tossing performers around as if they were weightless to heights that seem truly impossible. I have so much more to share but don’t want to give away the entire show.
Throughout the show we were poised on the edge of our seats, gasping audibly, repeating “Amazing”, “Incredible”, “No Way” over and over again. As is normal for a Cirque du Soleil show the intensity was delicately balanced by the fantasy and sometimes-even hilarity. It is an experience we will not soon forget. This is a don’t miss event for the entire family, you will truly get lost in the sights and sounds of Quidam.
A few things to note. The Sprint Center does not have parking, so you will have to pay to park. It seemed to be around $15-20 for parking in the immediate area. There are plenty of options for both food and drink inside the Sprint Center including adult beverages if you choose. Food and Drink prices were as you would expect at an event.
Ticket start at $40 and there are specials for family 4 and 8 packs.
Enjoy some of the amazing pictures of the artists from this delightful show.

{Disclosure: I received two free media tickets to facilitate this review. All photos and graphics & some descriptions of the acts provided by Cirque du Soleil.}
