Joplin: Learn How You Can Help!

Photo: ABC News
By now you've probably seen photos of the devastation in Joplin, MO after the tornado that hit on May 22.  Joplin is not far from KC...I know for me, this hit way too close to home.  My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Joplin!

I know a lot of you have been wondering how to help.  I've borrowed a list from another KC blogging friend, Penny Pinchin' Mom, with ways that we here in Kansas City can support the relief effort in Joplin.

Kansas City Blood Drives: Yesterday several special blood drives were held in the area.  I haven't seen a schedule for today yet, but I will update you as I find more info.  You can also visit http://www.savealifenow.org/ to find a local blood center.

Volunteer:
If you want to physically help and volunteer, you can call 800-427-4626.  If you have any medical training, head to ShowMeResponse.org

Help with Long Term Relief:  Often times, after storms such as these, the donations stop.  You can help with the ongoing efforts by checking out Missouri Interfaith Disaster Response Organization.

Heart of Missouri United Way:  Donate $10 instantaly by  “JOPLIN” to 864833.

Red Cross:
You can make a cash donation to the Red Cross to help victims on both sides of the state line by heading to their site and donating.  You can also text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate.

Heart to Heart International:  This is a company based out of Olathe, KS.  You can donate online at www.hearttoheart.org , calling 913-764-5200, or mailing it to 401 S. Clairborne, Suite 302, Olathe, KS 66062.  You can also sign up to volunteer if you have medical training — call 913-764-5200 or email volunteer@hearttoheart.org.  You can also put together hygiene kits — get more information on Heart to Heart’s website at www.hearttoheart.org.

Humane Society:  You can make a donation to help the animals affected by the storm by heading to www.hsmo.org .

Lots of local businesses are supporting the relief effort, too:

Thirty-One by Sarah Ralph: is donating 25% of purchases (100% of her profit) to the Joplin school district now through May 29.  More info here.

Spin! Pizza: If you're eating at Spin! and want to add a donation onto your check total, they are matching donations up to $2500.  More info on their Facebook page.

Smallcakes is donating a portion of all sales to the cause.  More info here.

Northland Auto Body and Tow: They are taking donations for blankets, bottled water, toiletries, canned goods, radios, tarps, flashlights, batteries and clothing to be dropped off at 64th and Chattham.  For more information call 816-741-2588.

I know there are many, many more places that are working to gather support and supplies for Joplin!  If you know of one that I have missed, leave me a comment or drop me an email - mykansascitymommy(at)gmail(dot)com - and I will update the list!

Thanks, Tracie, for compiling most of this list!
