I am usually a big fan of fiction retellings of Biblical stories. Nothing beats reading the true story in the Bible, but a good fiction author can immerse you into the story and make the characters come alive. I love that! A Reluctant Queen: The Love Story of Esther
, by Joan Wolf, fits into this category well. Readers are taken along on a journey with 15-year-old Esther as she finds herself in the world concubines vying for the attention and love of King Ahasuerus. She eventually becomes his wife and struggles with keeping their relationship solid while also knowing that it is her calling to save her people – something that her husband may not approve.This fictional adaptation takes quite a few liberties from the original Biblical account. If you are looking for a 100% accurate novel, this is not the one for you. Several times I found myself going back to the original story to check if something had really happened. This is something that I honestly love about reading great Christian Fiction retellings – it creates a strong desire to study the Biblical story and sort fact from fiction. While details have been changed, the overall theme of the story remains clear: God has a plan for your life!
