Holiday decorating. Quite often, it's considered success if we manage to just get the decorations up. Do you ever take the time to make sure everything is safe for your family once the hassle of decorating is over?
Underwriters Laboratories and everyone's favorite pals Kermit, Beaker and Bunsen have taken a stand to prevent injury this holiday season - and they are spreading the word that the number one cause of holiday fires involve decorations (56%). In fact, 21% of the time, the first thing ignited is the Christmas tree.
Underwriters Laboratories and everyone's favorite pals Kermit, Beaker and Bunsen have taken a stand to prevent injury this holiday season - and they are spreading the word that the number one cause of holiday fires involve decorations (56%). In fact, 21% of the time, the first thing ignited is the Christmas tree.
You can watch a short video here (or below) - featuring Dr. Dr. Honeydew Bunsen, his assistant Beaker and Kermit the Frog at the UL Labs, where they are encouraging families to “Commit A Minute” to safety.
Once you're committed to the cause, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:
· Consider LEDS - A candle can reach 1,000 degrees so always stay “three feet from the heat.”
· Never leave candles unattended- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of unexpected candle/oven flames.
· Water Your Tree - Trees that have dried out over several weeks burn faster than fresher, well-watered. Here’s a video of a side-by-side tree burn (yikes).
· Ensure lights bear the UL Mark - Lights intended for indoor-only use bear green holographic UL Marks - whereas lights intended for indoor and outdoor use bear red holographic UL Marks.
Definitely some great tips to keep in mind!
